Osteoporosis is a disease in which bones lose density (calcium and minerals) that causes bones to fracture easily resulting in pain and debilitation.  It is more common in post-menopausal women.  The most common bones affected are the spine, hips and wrists.  In the early stages of osteoporosis you might not experience any symptoms.

Treatment options include:

  • Oral medication: Fosamax, Boniva, Actonel
  • Injection therapy: Prolia, Reclast, Forteo

Osteoporosis risk factors include:

  • Postmenopause after age 50
  • Premature menopause before age 40
  • Smoking and alcohol abuse
  • Caucasion or Asian decent
  • Family history of fracture
  • Maternal history of osteoporosis
  • Low calcium and vitamin D intake
  • Low body weight
  • Inactive lifestyle
